DIY Coasters

Hello, Craft Enthusiasts,

Here are the details for all you need to know about making DIY homemade coasters. This project is both low cost and requires minimal effort, which makes it a WIN for the sake of your bank and the time invested.

The previous homeowners of our house left behind boxes of square kitchen tiles in the garage. Having extra tiles on hand, plus all the paint colors labeled throughout the house, was extremely helpful. I wanted to put these tiles to use without having them gather dust on the shelf, and the idea of repurposing them into coasters came to mind. So now you have it, the step-by-step process of making DIY Coasters.

Materials Needed:

  • Matte Modge Podge

  • Paint Brush

  • Waterproof Sealant - (find this in the craft section as a spray can sealant)

  • Scrapbooking/printed paper cut to the size of the tile

  • Variety Pack of Scotch Brand Protective Dots/Bumpers (these are versatile and can be used for countless projects)

  • Scissors - Optional to use a paper cutter instead

Instructions:

  1. First, select the paper you would like to use for each coaster. Get creative! All 4 coasters can match, color coordinate, or each can be different. Now, using your scissors or paper cutter, measure and cut the paper to size for each tile. *Note you will want the paper to be slightly smaller than the surface of the tile for the best adhesion and no peeling.

  2. Once you have cut the paper, now you will begin using the modge podge. Use your paintbrush to spread a thin layer of modge podge on the top of the tile. Adhere the paper to the top of the tile and then paint a layer of modge podge on top of the paper. Allow to dry for 2-3 minutes.

  3. Repeat layering modge podge over the paper 3 or 4 times *Be sure to let the glue dry 2-3 minutes between each coat.

  4. Once your coasters are dry - take your coasters outside (you can easily carry them on an old dish towel). Once you are in a well-ventilated area, use your spray can of waterproof sealant to seal the coasters. You only need a light layer on the top, and 2 coats of spray will get the job done. This makes each coaster waterproof when cold or icy glasses are set on top of the coaster.

  5. Once the coasters are fully dry, you are ready to adhere sticky dots or bumpers to the back of the coaster. This will prevent scratching while using them on any type of counter surface. You will attach 4 dots/bumpers on the underside of the coaster - placing 1 in each corner. Now your coasters are good to go for use around the house or wrapped in a bundle for gifting!
