Keeping A Word of the Year Alive

Dearest Readers,

We are quickly approaching a new season! The warmer weather has spoken to my heart, although today is a nasty/windy day in the lovely TX Panhandle. The cold bleariness of February was not my friend! Being outside refreshes my mental state, and our negative temperatures were not my favorite. I’ve been closely drawn to the seasonality of life these past few months - there’s a time and a season for everything. Our capacities as human beings shrink and expand as we navigate life. I’m a natural planner - always anticipating, seeking, and looking ahead. I have been strongly convicted by my day-to-day living - in my thoughts and actions, to be more present in the here and now. To acknowledge and confront myself when I get into that mental spiral of looking three steps ahead. To not be consumed by making the grocery list, cleaning the house, doing laundry, and getting stuck in “doing” my to-do list. Yes, these things are important, but our human relationships, especially the interior relationship with our hearts, cannot be overstated. From the condition of our heart is where everything else flows.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

There is an appointed time for everything,

and a time for every affair under the heavens.

A time to give birth, and a time to die;

a time to plant, and a time to uproot the plant.

A time to kill, and a time to heal;

a time to tear down, and a time to build.

A time to weep, and a time to laugh;

a time to mourn, and a time to dance.

A time to scatter stones, and a time to gather them;

a time to embrace, and a time to be far from embraces.

A time to seek, and a time to lose;

a time to keep, and a time to cast away.

A time to rend, and a time to sew;

a time to be silent, and a time to speak.

A time to love, and a time to hate;

a time of war, and a time of peace.

Above all, in this current season, I deeply desire to further explore my heart-to-heart relationship with Christ. I have been enslaved by my habits - go to work, care for the house, and make time for my husband, family and friends. Juggling our obligations and responsibilities can be a tough reality. It’s freeing to acknowledge, “Hey, I need to return to the Father’s arms; I can’t do anything alone. It all comes from Him; He gives me the grace.”

So, my dear friends, allow Him to give you the grace. Take that deep breath and think about the ordering of the priorities in your life. Christ is always waiting for you with open arms and has the greatest capacity to understand the posture of your heart.

Jesus, deliver me from the desire to rush

Jesus, deliver me from seeking progress on my own terms

Jesus, deliver me from seeking milestones and the next step

Jesus, deliver me from the mentality that there are not enough hours in the day

Jesus, deliver me from comparison

Jesus, deliver me from my selfish pride

As many know, I have enjoyed selecting and discerning a “Word of the Year.”

Choosing a word of the year symbolizes a sliver of a golden thread. You take that thread and aim to weave it into your daily life for 365 days. My archive of words the past few years has included:

-Receive 2023

-Delight 2024

-Hope 2025

It can be daunting to think about the momentum of keeping a word close to your heart all year. Truthfully, it ebbs and flows - sometimes, my word is forgotten for weeks on end. But truly, how my word re-surfaces and pops up again never fails to make me smile.

To help keep my word centered and on my mind - I created Word of the Year magnets! Walking with a special group of women in a weekly/bi-weekly bible study has been a magnificent blessing. Many of us partake in selecting a word of the year, and I thought these magnets would help our word take root. A tangible print that showcases our word. We can all place the magnet on the fridge and have a sweet, visible reminder of our chosen words.

I would 12/10 recommend these photo magnets from Amazon. They are a 2X3 size and well-made. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MSB6G8P?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I got the dimensions wrong originally (too small) when I printed these mini prints. But I cut them out anyway and gave each person the smaller print. One of my friends has been using her little word print as a bookmark - I thought that was a good, unique use! I made the Word of the Year images on Canva using beautiful art from talented artists.

Lady K’s One Thing:

Continued from the last blog post!

Nothing gets me out of the February Funk better than planning for my Spring/Summer garden. The anticipation of selecting the right seeds, the spot for the perfect amount of sun, and readying my garden beds has me so giddy! My plans this year are for a cut flower garden oasis. I sourced my seed last year from Eden Brothers and had fabulous success! They ship you flower tubers according to your growing season. It takes all the guesswork out! My growing season is 7a, and I placed my order; the seeds will come in a separate package in the next 5-7 days. The tubers will be sent in Late March to early April after the danger of freezes.

I got various herb seeds to start from scratch. Some great cut flower seed additions for verbena, cosmos, zinnias, and Four O’Clock flowers. I am most excited for these 4!

-Rhubarb Seed

-Anemone Tubers

-Dahlia Tubers

-Cupcake Zinnias
