Slow & Sad Country Tunes

Good morning, friends,

It is a cold and foggy morning here in Amarillo! I wish I were cuddled up by the fire with a book, sipping hot tea, but here I am, coming to you live from my work office. :)

I have to start this post with a note of gratitude to rural America for giving me a fond appreciation for sad, slow country music! A well-deserved shoutout to Texas 4-H for teaching me to dance and two-step in the 3rd grade.

Putting my boots on the wooden dance floor at a concert, wedding, or event makes my heart infinitely happy. I cannot recall the exact details, but I attended a wedding with my grandparents at the Country Club in Dalhart, Texas, when I was 7 or 8. I distinctly remember my Papa asking me to dance, and he took me to the dance floor and then had me place my feet on top of his boots. He danced me around the floor, and I was grinning from ear to ear the entire time. What a wonderful, fond memory I will always carry with me! At our wedding in 2022, I was extremely touched to share dances with my husband, father, and both of my grandfathers.

As the wise George Jones once said, “When you’re happy, you enjoy the music. When you’re sad, you understand the lyrics.”

For whatever reason, I have always been drawn to sad and slow country melodies. Numerous friends and family members have told me variations of:

  • “You listen to the most sad, depressing music ever!”

  • “If you play that music, I will fall asleep in the car.”

It makes me laugh because those statements are all very true. There is something that draws me to this type of music. I think it has to do with the honesty and vulnerability of the lyrics combined with the calming sensation of the music itself. If you have been following the blog for a while, you know Lady K is an old soul to the very core.

I have curated a “Slow & Sad Country Tunes” playlist on Spotify. I had a wonderful time blending this playlist. To be fair, not every song on the playlist is a sad “make you want to cry” or “drink your sorrows song.” Some are just good country songs with a slower beat. It has some great musical surprises and variations within the selection of songs. I hope it is a gift for your ears!

Before I present the playlist, I will leave you with a quote from Nicholas Sparks. “Youth offers the promise of happiness, but life offers the realities of grief.”
